The 2015 Montepulciano d Abruzzo Riserva A Marianna is a sleeping giant, staining the glass with purplish red hues. Earth tones and flowery underbrush notes give way to cherry sauce, grilled sage, tobacco and a hint of menthol that expertly balances out this otherwise dark and brooding expression. While intimidating on the nose, this is significantly more welcoming and vibrant on the palate with juicy acidity that energizes its silky textures. Tart red berries and hints of cedar drench the senses. Balsam herbs linger, along with notes of mocha and spiced citrus. The Riserva A Marianna reveals its structure, leaving a coating of fine tannins that resonate on. This hulking beast of Montepulciano will require further cellaring to find harmony. This was tasted over the course of twenty-four hours, and it only got better.
